Honu (\ha-nü\) is the Hawaiian word for sea turtle, an animal that symbolizes wisdom and longevity. At Honu, we work with people and organizations who are committed to improving life for others through long-term, sustainable approaches. We help organizations stay true to their core missions while also adapting to changing conditions, taking advantage of new opportunities and planning for an uncertain future.
At Honu, we use a strengths-based approach in our consulting work. We believe that people and organizations create change most effectively when they know what they do well and how they can use those strengths to grow, partner with others and improve their own practice.
So far at Honu Advisors, "we" is just me - Leslie Chandler Wang. I came to Houston in 2000 as a Teach For America corps member and taught fifth grade at Oates Elementary School. Although I was already a fervent believer in the importance of quality public education, my classroom experience helped me understand how many factors beyond the classroom impact student achievement. I also recognized the challenge given to frontline workers -- especially teachers, social workers and nurses -- who strive every day to make life better for others.
I attended business school at The University of Texas at Austin, where I earned an MBA focused on non-profit management. My goal was simple: to help the people who help other people. After graduate school, I served as a program officer at Houston Endowment, a private philanthropy in the greater Houston area. In that position, I had the privilege of learning about non-profit organizations in Houston and analyzing the unique strengths that they bring to tackling complex social problems. As a program officer, I developed a strong network among the non-profit and philanthropic community, along with a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities that drive the non-profit sector. Through this work, I have become an avid student of collective impact and similar models of collaborative engagement.
Honu Advisors is the next step in my goal to help the people who help other people. As Honu grows, I plan to collaborate with other consultants and will pilot a program to provide contract staffing for special initiatives and collaborative efforts. I look forward to sharing the Honu philosophy while I bring experience, compassion and humor to my practice. Please send me an email if you would like to discuss your work or your organization's needs.
